Informing and developing professional practice: How international educational programs influence nurse and midwife professional practice

AimThis paper forms part of a grounded theory study that aimed to determine the impact an international mobility program during nurse’s or midwife’s pre-registration on their subsequent nursing and/or midwifery practice. The focus this article is how and professional practice was informed developed through participation in educational programs.BackgroundParticipation education known have many positive benefits, however, previous studies highlighted need investigate long-term outcomes practice.MethodsUsing Charmaz’s constructivist approach, 13 general nurses, 2 mental health 3 midwives, 4 dual-qualified nurse/midwives from 8 different countries were interviewed. Data analysed following coding procedures, with three categories constructed. This focuses category conceptualised as Informing developing practice.FindingsParticipants experienced healthcare systems being reflective applying knowledge current contributed development International programs also found assist aspiring cementing decisions for regarding future practice.ConclusionParticipation has ongoing influence
